Ok, were gonna make and effect that looks like masking tape and is very nice for adding to pictures or anything like that. This tutorial is farely simple, so good luck.

1) First, open a new document with canvas size of 500px by 500px. Once the document is open, create a new trasperent layer and delete the background layer. So you should have you layers pallette like this.user posted image

2) Now make a rectangle marquee the shape of what you would think would be masking tape, but make it very big, we will resize it later. Once you have your selection fill with black. Deselect(ctrl d)

3) Now, here comes the tricky part, take the Polygonal marquee tool(located in with the lasso tool, right click lasso tool and select polygonal.) Now, what you need to do is use the polygonal tool and make pointy edges, and then delete them, on both sides, so your gonna have something like this.user posted image
To do that you should do the following:
-make a selection with polygonal maqruee on the left side, once happy delete the selection(delete key) the deselect(ctrl d)
-then do the same thing to other other side, then delete, and deselct, so now you have an image like the above one(3rd image down).
(If you need help with this pm me.)

4)Once you have that completed go up to filter>noise>add noise...
Put in the following settingsuser posted image
-Make sure the noise stays in side our shape. dont let it fill up the whole layer.

5) Next emboss the layer by going to filter>stylize>emboss... Put in the following settings. user posted image

6) its looking pretty good so far, now all we need is color. But to get the right color on this is very difficult. Well, difficult to figure out anyway. Ok, control click the layer, then go down to the layers pallete and click on the little paper image to create a new layer. user posted image
You should now have 2 layers: layer 1(with our masking tape), and layer 2, and empty layer.

7)With out masking tape shape selected, we are working with our layer 2. Fill it with black. Then open hue/saturation(ctrl u) and use he following settings:
Colorize checked.
Hue 58.
Saturation 53.
Lightness +69.
Click Ok. Deselect(ctrl d)

8) Set the blending mode to overlay user posted image
and merge the layers together(ctrl e)

9) Finally press ctrl t to free transform masking tape to the shape and size of your liking. When finished re shaping/sizing, press enter.

Now, there are extra effects you can add to make it look very cool.

1) Select you masking tape layer(the only layer). Then select the eraser tool and erase part of the tape in a shape like it was burnt off.

2) Once part is erased, ctrl click the layer, once the layer is selected, choose the brush tool, select a soft edge brush with the size of 9px, and set the brush flow to 50%, choose black as color. Now, slowly brush in the black on the inside of the selection on the edge of where it got erased. Then select the blur tool and blur the black area you just put in and wala! You now have a burnt masking tape affect.

Heres my final product: user posted image

Hope you found this tutorial useful, and I will have another tutorial soon. Please give me full credit for this tutorial, and ask me first before coping. Thank You.

P.S. I made that space image 2, I am planing on doin a tutorial on that later on, but im not sure. It would be very difficult. But, that image makes a very nice desktop background, pm if you would like the image alone, full size.
